Train Mountain Railroad

The World’s Longest Miniature Railroad

The museum operates strictly by donation.  Admission is free and we are currently operating on our winter schedule.

Directions

Train Mountain is located at 36941 South Chiloquin Rd in Chiloquin, Oregon, about 25 miles north of Klamath Falls.

From Hwy 97, turn west onto South Chiloquin Road.  This turn is very close to milepost 249 across from a Dollar General store and a Fuel Commander gas station. The main entrance will be on the left in about 0.85 miles. The driveway is flanked by a red Santa Fe caboose and a green Burlington Northern caboose.

From Crater Lake, take Hwy 62 south.  1/2 mile past milepost 102, turn left/east onto South Chiloquin Road. The main entrance will be on the right in about 1.15 miles.

The Visitor’s Center is 1000 feet straight ahead in Central Station. Look for a two-story wooden building.

Hours

Summer hours (mid-May through mid-October)

The Visitor’s Center and walking tours are open 9 am to 4 pm, 7 days a week except July 4th.

Rail tours operate between 10 am and 2:30 pm everyday except Saturday.  Saturday visitors are encouraged to ride the trains at the Klamath & Western Railroad instead.

Winter hours (mid-October through mid-May)

The Visitor’s Center is closed but guests may check in at the office and explore the Walking Tour.  The park is open 10 am to 2 pm Monday through Friday.

Rail tours do not operate during winter months.

Rail Tours

Educational rail tours are available on 1/8th scale trains between mid-May and mid-October.  Tours run daily from 10 to 3pm.  During the summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day, trains do not run on Saturdays so as not to conflict with the Klamath and Western Railroad.  Visitors are encouraged to visit the Klamath and Western Railroad on these Saturdays.

Tours are guided by one of our volunteer train crews and typically last a half hour.  Trains do not have schedules, but run based on visitor demand.  Large groups are encouraged to call ahead to ensure accommodation.  Rail tours are free but donations are welcome.

During a rail tour we ask for your cooperation with the following rules:

    • Remain seated while the train is in motion
    • Do not rock the cars or shift your weight suddenly
    • Do not lean out of your seat (eg to take a photo)
    • Do not reach to grab or touch anything with your hands or feet
    • Do not attempt heroics trying to recover a dropped item – notify the train crew and they will stop the train
    • Follow crew instructions in the event of a derailment or other situation.
Walking Tour

The Train Mountain Railroad Museum offers a self guided walking tour of the museum pieces and grounds.  Visitors must first check in at the visitor’s center where printed maps are available.

Where stairs are provided, visitors are welcome to explore inside the museum pieces.  Please do not climb on any of the museum equipment that is closed or taped off.  Visitors may not play with scale cars that are parked in yards or on sidings.

The walking tour will lead visitors to explore various pieces of snow fighting equipment, including the Southern Pacific MW206 rotary snow plow.  Also prominent on the tour is equipment from the Oregon, California and Eastern, which was a logging railroad that ran eastward from Klamath Falls to Lakeview.  Cabooses, freight cars, maintenance-of-way equipment, and restored signals are also featured on the tour.

The following documents are available to be printed:

Klamath and Western Railroad

The Klamath and Western Railroad is a non-profit organization separate from Train Mountain that gives train rides on Saturdays. The K&W leases trackage rights from Train Mountain for a 1.4 mile loop of track on the east side of the property.

The K&W loop was built by Edward St. John on property that he owned, and this predated Quentin Breen and his dream of building Train Mountain on adjacent land.  In 1992, Ed and Quentin agreed to connect their railroads, and Ed later sold his property to Train Mountain.

Ed built his railroad with the help of volunteers who came “over the hill” from Medford, and he named the railroad Over-the-Hill Live Steamers.  In the 2000’s, Over-the-Hill Live Steamers was renamed the Klamath and Western, but the tradition of giving rides to the public on summer weekends continued.

Train Mountain does not offer rail tours on Saturdays so as not to compete with the K&W. Train Mountain is open on Saturdays, but visitors seeking a train ride are encouraged to visit the K&W instead. Please note that they have a separate parking lot about 100′ east of Train Mountain’s entrance.

The K&W train rides are about 15 minutes long.  They also sell hamburgers and hotdogs.  It is a great experience for kids and makes a fun family outing. Visit their website HERE for more information.

Harvest Hosts

Harvest Hosts is an RV camping organization that invites their members to visit, experience, and stay overnight at host museums, farms, breweries, wineries, and other unique and special places.

Train Mountain is a host location within the Harvest Hosts network and offers one night of dry camping to these visitors.  An additional night or two may be granted through the Train Mountain business office upon arrival or during a stay.

All reservations for these stays must be made through the Harvest Hosts website.  Arrival instructions will provided through their online reservation approval process.

Donations or store purchases, as suggested by the Harvests Hosts website, are greatly appreciated.

Group Events

For large groups of visitors, please call ahead to arrange your visit.  This will allow us to have extra tour trains available and the additional crews necessary to operate them.

Group events such as picnics can also be hosted.  We have a large, grassy, shaded area near play equipment that is perfect for school groups, workplace parties, and the like.  Tour trains can be arranged for these events.

We also have indoor space available for large meetings or banquets.

Contact the Train Mountain office at 541-783-3030 to inquire about the possibilities.
