Train Mountain
The World’s Longest Miniature Railroad
RULES OF THE ROAD
1. MAXIMUM SPEED IS SEVEN MILES PER HOUR WHICH IS TEN SECONDS BETWEEN MILEPOSTS. Within yard limits and at diamond crossings (tracks crossing other tracks) the speed limit is 3 miles per hour.
2. TRAINS MUST MAINTAIN A MINIMUM SEPARATION OF 210′ WHICH IS TWO MILEPOST LENGTHS. Within yard limits the distance between trains may be reduced. A safe stopping distance (half the distance to the next train or obstruction) must be maintained.
3. ALL TRAINS MUST HAVE BOTH AN ENGINEER AND A CONDUCTOR DURING MEETS, except for speeders and similar light weight equipment that can be safely removed from the track by the operator. A conductor is not required within yard limits. During Non-Meet Times a conductor is recommended but not required.
4. CREWS MUST FLAG TWO MILEPOST LENGTHS (210′) BEHIND ANY TRAIN STOPPED OR BACKING ON MAIN TRACK. At night a flashlight must be used for flagging. During non-meet times, a traffic safety cone or triangle, minimum height 12”, can be used to accomplish flagging. Flagging is suggested but not required within yard limits.
5. SOUND HORN OR WHISTLE (– – o –) AT W SIGN AT GRADE CROSSINGS. At night do not sound horns or whistles near campgrounds.
6. TRAINS MAY NOT PASS A SIGNAL DISPLAYING A SOLID RED INDICATION or a dark signal. All other indications allow trains to proceed.
7. AFTER ENTERING A SIDING LEAVE SWITCH LINED FOR MAIN TRACK to prevent a Train from entering an occupied siding.
8. DROP A GREEN BLOCK TO THE RIGHT OF THE TRACK AT ANY DERAILMENT LOCATION. Not only does this tell track crews where problems are, it warns the next train that there is a track problem.
9. REMOTE CONTROL TRAINS MUST BE CONTROLLED FROM ON BOARD OR DIRECTLY BESIDE THE TRAIN.
10. ALL TRAINS MUST MONITOR A RADIO PROGRAMMED TO TRAIN MOUNTAIN CHANNELS. Typically, UHF channel 1-ADMIN is the monitored channel.
11. STEAM LOCOMOTIVES OPERATED AT TRAIN MOUNTAIN MUST BE FIRED WITH PROPANE.
12. SAFETY CHAINS, CABLES OR DRAWBARS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN EQUIPMENT to prevent runaway cars. Connections must be made to the equipment’s frame and safety chains must use threaded quick links.
13. TRAINS MUST HAVE A RED FLAG. Minimum flag size is 12″ x 12″.
14. ALL CONDUCTORS MUST HAVE A WHISTLE to communicate with the engineer.
15. WHEN RUNNING AT NIGHT TRAINS MUST HAVE A WHITE HEADLIGHT ON THE LOCOMOTIVE AND A RED TAILLIGHT MOUNTED ON THE REAR OF THE LAST CAR.
